Quick Hit: Weekend Manicure

Hey folks!

I showed you a bit of the manicure I had on this weekend in yesterdays post (the pics with the rings), so I figured I’d give you the closeup:

I did the Sally Hansen Salon Effects in Sweet Marble Floret, and the ring fingers are done in Julep’s Fina. I do love me some Sally Hansen nail stickers, because it gives you a polished (ha! I crack myself up 😀 ) look very quickly. I was tired and ready to go to bed, basically, and this was quick. 🙂

I have some outfit posts coming for the rest of the week. Happy Wednesday!

Fatshionista Vacation: Shop and Swap!

When we last left off of my vacation adventures, I’d gotten my hair done up all fancy.

Saturday, I got to go out and enjoy the warm weather at a Shop and Swap!

Kellie from And I Get Dressed hosted the event, and it was all about some fabulous bloggers selling some of their beautiful pieces, as well as seeing some new items from different brands.

I figured it was as good a time as any to take my camera out for a test drive. I still have some kinks to work out (why did I put the date on these pics?!), but I have to say: LOVE!

I was handed a shopping bag, and off I went to peruse the racks. I love how spacious the venue was. We were all able to look around without feeling squished (and I don’t do well with squished.) Every blogger there was super sweet and posed for pics with all who asked. I was a bit too shy to ask for a picture, but I took pics of some amazing pieces:

Y’all, I really wanted that shoe. Curse these too big feet!

There were also retailers there. I stopped by the Fashion to Figure table to take a look at their summer collection:

And by Eloquii to see some of their new products:

I’m like a magpie y’all; I adore me some sparkle (it comes in other colors as well). I couldn’t get a pic of their gorgeous yellow skirt because everyone wanted to try it on (and it’s as beautiful in person too. Get it while you can!)

ModCloth gave away 30 dresses(!). And that pretty blue and white one on the table there? I won it! It has the alphabet all over it and bonus: it has pockets!

So, SimplyBe was there as well. They had a deal going where if you Instagrammed an item (see above), you could get your pick of their collection for free. If you also followed them on Instagram, you could take a second. The shoes did not fit (big feet problems), but I scored two dresses instead!

I picked up two rings from Kellie’s collection, and a black playsuit from Margie’s collection. Basically, I left with two bags of happiness:

And a really cute pic from the photo booth:

Big smile! My dress is from Old Navy.

Oh, I know y’all want pics of all of the clothing.

Nope. Gotta wait. I’m wearing them all later on for FFF Week! 🙂

Fatshionista Vacation: I Got My Hair Done!

I am pretty lazy when it comes to my hair. Most of the time I’ll do a wash, deep condition, twist it up, pick it out.

I kept it in a high poof or a front poof, mostly because my hair was uneven.

Yep. Was. 🙂

I actually had some time on Friday to treat myself to something nice, so I made an appointment at Mirror Salon.

I had no idea that Carol’s Daughter had a salon in the back of the store, but now I do, and I will be going back!

So, before you settle into your service, you have a chat with the stylist about your hair and what goals you have for it. Do you want it to grow longer? Do you wish it were thicker? What do you love about your hair?

For me, I’d love for it to grow out, but my focus was dead ends and unevenness. With me having two different curl patterns in my head, wearing it out made for a challenge. The front of my hair has tight, coily curls, and the back of my hair is all loose curls. Now, y’all have seen me with my hair picked out, but y’all couldn’t see the back of it. I have the Fro Mullet.

Fierce in the front, wtf in the back? Yeah. Not sexy.

I told this to my stylist, Sandy, and she grinned a bit at my description. I don’t think she realized how bad the struggle was until she washed it. She sat me up and got a good look, and she seemed genuinely puzzled.

“What is going on back here?”

*giggle* “Yep, told you I had another curl pattern going on back there!”

She told me she’d probably would have to give it a considerable trim to even it out. While the back is probably always going to be longer than the front, the way she would cut it would make it look the same length all around, even if I picked it out completely.

That made me happy, because I would wear my hair out more if it didn’t look so odd in the back. So she got to work. I told her all about my upcoming Full Figured Fashion Week events, and to the Shop and Swap I would be attending Saturday.

“Ok, so I’ll do a rod set for you, and you’ll have definition throughout the weekend as you’re out doing your thing.”

Now, it was my turn to be skeptical. My hair never has done well with styles. Even when I relaxed, my hair would never hold a curl or do anything but hang there. As a natural girl, since my curl pattern varied so widely, I could really only do a couple of styles anyway.

“Don’t worry,” Sandy said. “I’ll show you how to keep it up.”

Ok then.

About an hour later, I had this:

wpid-20140613_174133.jpgwpid-20140613_174120.jpg

The part that I loved the most was that it looked as though I had baby dreads all over my head. The curls were all sproingy and happy, and I smelled so good! (Tui oil is the truth, y’all!) And Sandy gave me the good news that the Rosemary Mint Shampoo was coming back, and that just made my absolute day!

So, for upkeep I was to sleep in a satin bonnet and in the morning, take a wide toothed comb and lift the roots a bit. At my look of confusion, Sandy clarified: “Take the comb at the roots, but only comb about halfway through. This will give you lift at the crown, and still keep your definition on the ends.”

And as I sit and write this post up, my hair STILL looks amazing. I’ll probably pick it completely out tomorrow. She did an amazing job!

If you happen to be in NYC and want a great place to get your hair done, stop by! You’ll be glad you did!

Quick Hit: This Weekend’s Mani

Hey folks!

I am rounding that homestretch right before vacation. You know the one I mean.

It’s only a few days, but it feels like time is ticking backwards till you can finally have a drink or 4 and sleep in the next morning.

🙂

Anyhow, I realize I didn’t show you a manicure last week, and that’s because I didn’t really have time to do one because of Super Important Work Stuff. I just took the opportunity to let my nails breathe a bit.

But the night before Super Important Meeting, I stopped by the store to grab some pantyhose and some Sally Hansen nail stickers caught my eye.

Reverse manicure. Nice!

wpid-20140605_220650.jpg

Disk-O Queen!

So, the box made it as though the half moon was matte and the rest of the look was glitter, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it’s glittery top to bottom! There are a couple more reverse french looks I want to try, as well as some twists on the classic french I’m picking up soon. Totally a go to when I just don’t have the time to do a full nail look but want to be polished.

Hmm. Nail design or stickers this week? Stay tuned!

Announcement!

So! If you follow me on Instagram (and if you don’t, feel free!) then you know I recently acquired a new camera.

I can’t even explain how excited I am! 😀

I’m gonna get to the announcement shortly, but first: story time!

I have been wanting to upgrade to a nice digital camera for a while now. There’s nothing wrong with camera and iPad pics by any means (it’s what I’ve been using so far), but I want to be able to make it look more professional and play around with photography more.

So I asked around for some suggestions. One of my coworkers, an excellent photographer, suggested a Nikon camera. My cousin seconded Nikon and added Canon to the mix.

I don’t know very much about cameras, but I had two requirements: it needed to be portable (I carry my life in my bag and I don’t need my camera to add extra weight), and that it had to take high definition video.

Once I took a tour of the Best Buy and handled a couple of good looking cameras, I decided upon a Nikon D3200.

My wallet wasn’t in tune with my desires, at least not for now. This is normal. Hold out two things for me to choose from and I can guarantee that I am going to pick the most expensive of the two. My mama says I got that from my grandmother.

But, at least it was all decided, half of the battle won!. When I spoke with my cousin about picking a model, he told me to let me know which I wanted.

And then…he bought it for me:

wpid-img_20140604_214000.jpg

I am super excited and super grateful for this blessing, because now I can…

GET ON YOUTUBE!!!

I have a webcam on my computer, but it..well, kinda sucks. All of the video looks really grainy on it. Rather disappointing. I’ve been holding off doing tutorials for just this reason. I could do it in picture form, but sometimes there’s just no substitute for motion.

And so, next month, I will be premiering my YouTube channel! I am so excited (and scared! but it’s a good thing!) to start this endeavor. Now, I know you’re wondering why not do it now? Simple: I have to learn to work my camera properly first. 😀 I ought to have it down by the time July rolls in. It will be coming to Full Figured Fashion week as well, so I’ll get to find my bearings more.

I’ll be doing nail and makeup tutorials, of course. But question to you, my lovely readers: what would YOU like to see? I love to give my opinion, so I can do that too, if y’all might be interested. Leave me some ideas below!

For fun: some more shots of the new equipment!

wpid-wp-1402019987531.jpgwpid-wp-1402020035943.jpgwpid-wp-1402020092246.jpg

I have a feeling I will be using that guide mode quite a bit. 🙂

Can’t wait to get started on this new journey, and I hope y’all will come along for the ride! I am aiming for a video a week to start off, and maybe more as time allows.

Have an awesome weekend!

On Buying A Swimsuit

I get sea sick.

I don’t do boats, even though I love fishing.

I love the beach, but stay on the sand.

I don’t do water, really. Not unless it’s for bathing/cooking/cleaning/water balloons.

And yet, every year, I find myself wanting a bathing suit. Considering the most I’m gonna do near a body of water is lounge next to it, I could probably get away with a pair of shorts and a tank.

But I like bathing suits. They’re so pretty!

And to piggyback off of my last post where I spoke about trends that scare me, I find myself looking at bikinis more and more. But the bikini trend I’m not so afraid of. It would be different, yes, but last year I wore a suit that had all of my back out. Belly would be the final frontier, as it were.

Now, for the most part, I prefer to do one piece suits. And this actually has nothing to do with wanting to cover up everything inasmuch as it has to do with simplicity. Two piece suits are work! I have to find a set that matches, and then I have to try it on.

And on top of that: I don’t like bras. I have a sizable enough rack, so I need one. Bikini tops with underwire: lovely for support, feels like a bra. If I get a wireless top…then I’m sagging all over the place. No.

Do. Not. Want.

I don’t mind the bottoms so much. A high waisted brief seems like a good idea: kind of corset like. I like corsets. But they’re hot (and not like “oooh!” hot either.)

A good one piece suit, on the other hand, is ONE piece. I put it on, throw on sundress and sandals, and go. Simple!

And yet…I find it so hard to decide between this:

From Monif C

Or this:

From Swimsuits For All.

I just can’t decide. I would use functionality as a tie breaker, but again. I can’t swim (I’d learn, but am a bit afraid of water), the most I do is dip a leg in the ocean or stand in the shallow end of the pool. Don’t need much for that.

And they’re both gorgeous. How do I choose?

I’m not. Come next payday, I’m getting them both. 😀

I swear I didn’t fall off the face of the Earth, y’all. I am still here. 😀

Most of my days are being spent preparing for Full Figured Fashion Week (are any of you, my lovely readers, attending? Let me know! Maybe we can do lunch!)

But I have a huge announcement of a project I will be starting next month, and I am bringing that to you at the end of the week.

First, I must procure the necessary items…

You’re gonna love it!

Here’s the power song this week:

Fashion post coming Thursday, and Friday: the big reveal!
