Full Figured Fashion Week: Getting Social

I had some fun both Wednesday and Thursday last week, while doing some fun fashion things. Friday, I had the opportunity to attend Eloquii‘s trunk show and do some socializing.

Let me say, I always thought that as I got older, I would learn how to make friends more easily. I don’t know that I would have called myself shy as a child, but I was definitely apprehensive around new folks. Even now, I’m pretty friendly, but I don’t open up to you fully until I have some time to feel you out. I’m still trying to step out of my shell socially, and it’s hard for me. Particularly if I have to do it alone.

Sometimes, I still don’t quite feel like I fit in.

I went to this trunk show alone. Lord knows, I have the hardest time working a room and being a social butterfly. You’d think, at 29, this would get better. It has, maybe slightly (normally, if I couldn’t find someone to come with me I wouldn’t go at all) since I still went alone, but I was still nervous as I stepped in the room. I shouldn’t have been. Everyone was warm and welcoming as soon as I stepped into the room.

Now, I haven’t been back in the blogging game for long (haven’t even hit a year yet), so I felt a little alone as all of the bloggers who’ve been doing their thing for some time greeted each other with hugs. I was looking at the clothes when I spotted Dionna from Made Me Pretty. Nervously, I walked over to introduce myself, and as soon as I touched her arm, she gave me the biggest smile and hug ever! 🙂

It felt nice to be…wanted. Welcome. A part of the group. Whoa.

I guess to fully experience things, you just have to jump in with both feet.

After exchanging pleasantries, we oohed and ahhed over the new pieces and sipped champagne, then we separated a bit to look around more. There were tarot card readings, and manicures (naturally, mine were already done), and I had on this fabulous purple shift dress from Simply Be:

This is the one I picked up at the Shop and Swap. A quick note on fit: The sleeves can be tight on those with bigger arms, so you may want to go up a size to accommodate.

After we had a lot of fun nibbling on treats and sipping drinks, we needed to head out to the fashion show. But first, we had to take a selfie:

Once we got to the venue, of course I had to get a picture of the scenery:

And then out came some amazing fashion. I’m just sharing a few looks here, cause we’d be here all day (400+ pics, y’all. Seriously.)

I had such a good time!

While I was at Friday’s show, I also made myself another new friend, one who hasn’t started blogging, but was happy to soak up some of my suggestions. More on that (and more fashion!) tomorrow. 🙂

Fatshion Friday: I Wear What I Want

I wear what I want.

Even if it scares me, even if people think I shouldn’t.

I wear what I want.

Yesterday, I went to FFF Week’s trunk show, and got to meet some lovely designers (and a baker), and I wore my new shirt from Feminine Funk. This is the one I picked up at Wednesday’s event, and spoke so cryptically about yesterday.

I cannot tell you how many compliments I received. I love this shirt to itty bitty pieces.

The kicker?

It’s a crop top.

imageimage

I never in a million years thought that I would do a crop top. It’s a look that I covet but never thought I would be able to pull off. But bolder looks, like hair and makeup, take confidence to pull it off. If you think sexy, you are. Words to live by. Now, I put a vest on with the outfit because I was worried about my love handles being out–a great option if, like me, you want to take baby steps towards such a bold statement. And as I walked the New York streets, as I walked around the trunk show, everyone loved the statement.

I wear what I want.

Including wearing my hair free and lavender lippy:

wpid-20140619_173430.jpg

My hair is much shorter than it was before and I love it so! The lip is a combo of bright blue lipstick and pink gloss.

Anyone can wear anything. It’s all about finding a look that speaks to you and makes you happy.

So, join me. And wear what you want. 🙂

Fatshionista Vacation: Shop and Swap!

When we last left off of my vacation adventures, I’d gotten my hair done up all fancy.

Saturday, I got to go out and enjoy the warm weather at a Shop and Swap!

Kellie from And I Get Dressed hosted the event, and it was all about some fabulous bloggers selling some of their beautiful pieces, as well as seeing some new items from different brands.

I figured it was as good a time as any to take my camera out for a test drive. I still have some kinks to work out (why did I put the date on these pics?!), but I have to say: LOVE!

DSC_0002DSC_0003

I was handed a shopping bag, and off I went to peruse the racks. I love how spacious the venue was. We were all able to look around without feeling squished (and I don’t do well with squished.) Every blogger there was super sweet and posed for pics with all who asked. I was a bit too shy to ask for a picture, but I took pics of some amazing pieces:

Y’all, I really wanted that shoe. Curse these too big feet!

There were also retailers there. I stopped by the Fashion to Figure table to take a look at their summer collection:

And by Eloquii to see some of their new products:

DSC_0007

I’m like a magpie y’all; I adore me some sparkle (it comes in other colors as well). I couldn’t get a pic of their gorgeous yellow skirt because everyone wanted to try it on (and it’s as beautiful in person too. Get it while you can!)

wpid-img_20140614_142219.jpgwpid-img_20140614_145734.jpg

ModCloth gave away 30 dresses(!). And that pretty blue and white one on the table there? I won it! It has the alphabet all over it and bonus: it has pockets!

wpid-img_20140614_142907.jpg

So, SimplyBe was there as well. They had a deal going where if you Instagrammed an item (see above), you could get your pick of their collection for free. If you also followed them on Instagram, you could take a second. The shoes did not fit (big feet problems), but I scored two dresses instead!

wpid-20140614_202253.jpgwpid-20140614_202320.jpg

I picked up two rings from Kellie’s collection, and a black playsuit from Margie’s collection. Basically, I left with two bags of happiness:

And a really cute pic from the photo booth:

Big smile! My dress is from Old Navy.

Oh, I know y’all want pics of all of the clothing.

Nope. Gotta wait. I’m wearing them all later on for FFF Week! 🙂

Fatshion Friday: Trends that Scare Me

So, to close out my week of things that scare me…and the challenges I’m issuing myself, let’s talk about clothes.

You know I love me some clothes. 😀

Often, what I choose to wear is dictated by two things: what I love, and what is best for my body type. But sometimes being so safe makes me think I’m missing out on some good trends. Sure, every trend isn’t for every one, or every body, but it’s good to test out new things.

I wasn’t sure if skinny jeans were something for me. Sometimes I think that just because it’s made in my size doesn’t mean it’s for me to actually wear.

Bought three pairs, and I love their versatility. I even have them in pink!

Now, I wore a body con dress for the first time a couple weeks ago. Folks with bellies are not advised to wear body con dresses, because it accentuates the belly.

Wore it anyway. Rocked it.

And yet, there are still some things I would love to try and I’m scared to do so. Different attracts attention, and I have to be ready for what it brings. Curious about the things I’m digging? Here are a few things I’m challenging myself to buy and wear this summer:

1. Short Shorts:

From Torrid

These shorts are so cute! And I fear they are not going to be as sexy on me as they are in pictures. Now I do shorts, but normally I wear longer shorts like these because I worry about them riding up and looking weird. This has not stopped my lust, and perhaps all I need is the right pair to work for me. I’m up for the challenge.

2. Crop Tops

master piece crop top plus sizes

From CustomPlus

From Forever 21+

Sigh. I love everything about the concept. I see how they are styled. I know that crop doesn’t equal my belly on full display. I still can’t wrap my mind about how it would look on me, and if I could pull it off. I still want to try. I just hope it doesn’t go horribly wrong. The crop top brings me to the next trend:

3. High Waist Jeans

From Plus Size Fix

I can’t figure out how high waist jeans work. High waist skirts, yes, because more than likely they’re so stretchy I can make them come completely over my tummy and sit comfortably. Now, if one adds a zipper and button to the mix…does it dig? Do they go up high enough to not create a higher muffin top? There are logistics that I just don’t get. And yet, if I find a pair in the store I can try on (*stares at companies that make me shop for these things online*) I will, just to see if I can make it work. Don’t know if I’m brave enough to buy, but I’ll try it on.

And finally…

4. Rompers/Jumpsuits

From Monif C.

From Kamishade

From Forever 21+

Rompers confuse me too. I think they’re adorable, and super comfy, but having to get naked to pee…well, it’s a bit disconcerting. What if it’s an emergency? Is there an emergency drop thread that would allow the garment to fall quickly when pulled? Also: it’s very belly focused, not that it’s stopped me before.

But this is one trend I’m taking by storm. That last romper I posted from Forever 21? I bought last week. And I’m going to wear it next week on one of my off days.

Stay tuned. 🙂

Fatshion Friday: NYCC Cosplay Prep

So I mentioned yesterday that I realized that I haven’t begun to plan my costumes for New York Comic Con. I know there are folks reading this like…it doesn’t happen until October. There’s plenty of time!

Um, no. Not if I am making these pieces from scratch. And I am dressing for all four days, so I need to get to work planning and sourcing the materials.

We won’t talk about how I have very little experience sewing. I’m getting myself a sewing machine for my birthday this year, so I at least want to have a concept to work from. And my first pieces won’t be my NYCC ones, but I hope it comes out well.

Anyway.

I plan on doing three heroines and one villainess. I won’t share them all at once though (’cause how much fun would that be?) First one I’m sharing is this amazing character here:

image

This is Monica Rambeau, and she’s known by many names: Captain Marvel, Spectrum, and Photon (that’s the pic above) to name a few. I started my sketch with this pic in mind:

wpid-img_20140410_164643.jpg

But then I kept scrolling through pics of her and found this one (she’s Spectrum here, in the Mighty Avengers):

image

Oh, my. So I modified my sketch a bit. I am keeping the cape, but I love the duo chromatic color scheme:

wpid-2014-04-10-23.20.54.jpg.jpeg

Only half is colored because I’m trying to decide if I want to switch it up. Still working on if I want to do leggings or hot pants for extra coverage, or if I want a bodysuit (bathroom logistics!) But I love what I have so far.

Designing is fun. Can’t wait to get my sewing machine and really start practicing!

Fatshion Friday: Getting Crafty

I am someone who almost always has to alter her clothes. I’ll convert long sleeves into cap sleeves and raise or lower a hemline to make a piece work.

Last night, I actually took a piece from start to finish.

Darby Smart is a company that, like Birchbox or Ipsy, has a subscription service where you can create…well, anything really. Some of their past boxes included a light up sign and cupcake toppers.

I happened to browse their site a couple of weeks ago and picked up a couple of boxes (you can get boxes without the subscription) to try. One of them was for a clear clutch.

I’ve been seeing clear, sparkly clutches a lot, but they were either a) not my style or b) way too expensive. But, for $39, I could create my own.

wpid-20140327_222636.jpg

So, the kit came with the clutch, adhesive, a strap, Swarovski crystals, and a sponge applicator. I purchased the studs as an add-on, just because I wanted a combo of tough and glitter. Putting together my design was fun; like playing a combo of Bejeweled and Tetris. Here’s the result:

wpid-20140327_232426.jpg

wpid-20140327_233340.jpg

wpid-20140327_233403.jpg

This project was so much fun! I did all of the crystals on the front so as to minimize the risk of them catching on whatever fabric I was wearing, and did studs across the top and sides. I have to let this dry for 24 hours, so I have time to plan an outfit to wear this with.

I have one more box to craft, but I am already looking for yet another project to do. The wood burning kit is calling my name!
