Nail Adventures: Disco Snowflakes

It’s December, and NYC hasn’t seen an inch of snowfall yet.

As a matter of fact, I’m typing this in a tank and leggings. Like, it’s warm outside.

I am not complaining.

I do like the snow, and do miss it just a little bit. It’s really pretty when it first falls.

It’s even prettier when I don’t have to walk in it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Anyway, I figured, in homage to the upcoming non-white Christmas, I’d do my own sparkly version on my nails. Glitter and sequins and rhinestones, oh, my!

1-20151213_223201_Richtone(HDR)

This manicure took me a little longer than usual (about two hours vs my usual 45 minutes), but I am so excited about it, y’all! I’m like a magpie; I am attracted to all things glittery and sparkly. As I type this, I am having a hard time keeping my eyes on the screen and not my hands because each finger catches the light at my desk.

The rundown: the blue is Essie’s Butler Please, the ring fingers are two colors layered: silver is Essie’s Apres-Chic (pictured) with OPI’s In True Stefani Fashion on top. The glitter is by Essence, and I applied each piece one at a time with an orange stick. This would be the longest part, but it was so worth it because I like my chunky glitter to be even. Pointer finger has a rhinestone at the center of the snowflakes, which I used a Sally Hansen nail art pen for. They didn’t come out as perfect as I hoped, but the imperfection is perfect for me.

I’m dreaming of a sparkly Christmas…:D

Nail Adventures: Sweet and Sparkly

Hey loves!

So this blog is an offshoot of The Curvy Fashionista Photo Challenge I told y’all about last week. And today’s subject is Mani Monday!

Y’all know there was no way I’d miss this one, right? ๐Ÿ™‚

Yesterday, I had a day full of chores and then a fun night of dinner with my fellow blogger Shecoul and friends.

And of course my nails hadn’t been done since the gel nail failย of a week ago.

But what’s my normal go to? Sally Hansen Nail Decals! They’ve never let me down. I added Clio from Julep to give my characteristic sparkle, and came up with this:

wpid-20140803_143902.jpg

Since I had to climb Mount Laundry yesterday, I needed something quick, and for me, nothing dries quicker than glitter polish. The downside is that it’s a booger to take off, but it’s a trade off I was willing to take. The decals are called Aflorable.

Coming up tomorrow: a premiere! (Barring any unforeseen circumstances, of course.)

See you then!

Nail Adventures: Sally Hansen Gel Manicure

Life has slowed down, at least a bit. So, after I had some delicious sushi, I decided to do my nails.

I managed to find the Sally Hansen Gel Manicure kit at a steep discount, so I thought, why not? I’ve never done a gel manicure, and this way I can try it out myself.

Why no gel? Gel manis focus on long wear. I get antsy about my nail polish after about two days and I want to change it. Gel manicures you have to soak and scrape off, and ugh.

Ain’t nobody got time for that.

But then, the application is quick. And for me, that’s the tedious part, particularly if I’m doing designs: waiting for the layers to dry. Gel manis? 30 second cure, move on to next layer.

And that is something I DO have time for.

So, I figured, why not give it a try?

wpid-wp-1406165970630.jpg

I decided this is a situation where less is more, since I’m navigating a whole new system with this manicure. I figured, maybe I’ll do an accent nail, use the nail guides, nothing too over the top.

And for what it’s worth, it is really easy to apply and really fast. I kept thinking that nothing was truly dry in between curing, but it was, so I was listening to music and having a delicious drink AND doing my nails without the fear of smudging. Win.

The bad part? Trying to design!

Ok. So the original plan for my accent nails was to lay down some of that silver there (name is Hi Ho Silver), lay down two of the chevron nail guides in a diamond shape, and cover in the red. Basically, I should have had a silver diamond outline on my nails.

That…did not happen, because I couldn’t get the damn nail guides to stick!

So, here’s the thing. While you do an at home gel mani, the polish feels sticky between layers even though it’s dry. So I’m thinking it shouldn’t be that difficult for the nail guide to stick. They stick on standard dry polish with no issues. Well, I was mighty wrong in that aspect. They slid and shifted as though my nail and the guides were covered in some type of oil. I thought maybe the adhesive on the guides wore off or something, but they stuck to my skin just fine. Color me confused.

I got them to lay long enough to put some glitter inside the little diamond shape. I was basically holding the nail guides taut on my skin to try and create some kind of shape at this point. It’s ok, I guess. I did just a solid glitter accent on the other hand which I liked better, but not by much:

wpid-wp-1406253679292.jpgwpid-wp-1406253753923.jpg

The red, by the way, is called Red My Lips.

Meh. I have never been so underwhelmed by a manicure in my life. I don’t know if it’s the color, the glitter, or what. I’m not impressed with this work. But I will say the shine on my nails is awesome, and it really is quick and easy. I was done in under 30 minutes, and that was with scrambling around looking for some glitter to put on. I think if I were one who prefers to keep just one color on my nails (or an undesigned accent nail) I would like it more.

For science, I’m keeping this on to get a feel for how this stands up to work, and let y’all know (it’s coming off next Wednesday, though.) Unless I just get too irritated with my hands and take it off tomorrow. We’ll see.

Hey, never a bad thing to try something new! I may keep playing around with it to see if there’s a look I like in gel, but I think I’ll stick to standard for now.

Happy weekend, y’all!

Nail Adventures: Julep Mystery Box

Because I don’t seem to have enough nail polish in my collection (insert massive sigh), I decided to add on even more with the February Julep Mystery Box.

You were able to pick between three boxes this month. One focused for manicures, one for pedicures, and one for facials (I think? I don’t quite remember). You could get one or all three!

Y’all think I bought all three, don’t y’all?

I didn’t. I can exercise some restraint! ๐Ÿ˜€

I actually went for Aphrodite, which was the box for pedicures. Here in the frozen north, it isn’t anywhere near time for flip flops or sandals or anything but fuzzy socks and boots, but I really want to do my toes and treat myself.

Enough talk. On to the pictures!

IMG_20140218_203421

So, what you see there is a combo of the box, Cupid’s Add on, and Rosa, the February Birthstone Polish. Close up swatches:

Mint Condition Pedi Creme. New item for me, so I can’t wait to try. I also got the DoubleStep friction stick (repeat from past boxes but I love it so much I don’t care!) and a new foot file. I was actually going to get myself a new one, so, score!

Polishes:

From left to right: Stefani (silver creme with gold glitter), Kennedy (yellow-beige creme), and Angela (teal metallic creme).

20140218_205052

And finally, the February birthstone polish. February’s birthstone is amethyst, and this is an amethyst glitter named Rosa.

Karen is a duplicate from one of my first boxes I got, but it’s so pretty I know my bestie will love it. Rosa I picked up because it’s named for Rosa Parks, who was born in February. Honestly, I was a bit underwhelmed with the color selection this month (it’s a bit more neutral than I prefer), but Aphrodite is really pretty and Rosa is pretty high coverage glitter. Love! Can’t wait to take it for a test drive!

In all? Seven new polishes, plus a foot creme and file. My feet will be sandal ready, even if the weather isn’t!

But seriously, can we give it a rest with the snow? It’s enough now. ๐Ÿ™‚

So, Before the Snowpocalypse Came…

I attended a wedding and got to dress up!

With my work schedule, it doesn’t happen often, so I decided to take as much advantage as I could. I had time to shop a massive sale at Lane Bryant and picked up some dresses. The dress I wore in yesterday’s New Year’s post was one dress, and this was the other one I picked up:

20131228_124305

I had to add a cami underneath (because, helloooo, boobs! also, cold), and put on a wrap (because sleeveless, and, again, cold). It’s black with copper dots on it, and it’s so pretty.

It’s a rarity for me to get to wear heels too, because retail+heels=bad day for Char. So, I picked up these beauties:

20131228_134558

Got ’em from Payless! Copper, gold, and a smidge of green, so pretty!

And I’m gonna take a minute here to vent a bit: hi, shoe stores? Some of us wear 10 1/2 to 11 shoes. Some of us also want said 10 1/2 to 11 shoe to be PRETTY, dammit. Don’t be giving me clodhoppers because I have big feet. There is NO reason for that. Please to have that in stock, for the love of all that is glittery. Thanks.

The day’s makeup: neutral as usual. But I love how it came out.

20131228_093116

The best part was I finally got to use my Urban Decay Vice 2 palette. The lip is a Sephora lipstick that’s probably past it’s prime but I love it so.

And finally? The nails, of course! There’s no way I go to a wedding and not have them done! But again, nice and neutral:

IMG_20131228_013007

Apparently, this outfit was all about the black, brown, and metallic. Whole mani is Julep, and I’m sure you’ll recognize the gold flakes as Gianna. I have gotten more mileage out of that polish than I thought I would. It’s an awesome touch of sparkle where you need it.

And there you have it! I’m gonna go bury myself under the covers until it thaws outside (or until I have to get dressed in the morning. -_-) Until next time, stay beautiful!

Happy New Year!

Hi Lovelies!

So, my work load caused me to take a two week hiatus. Sorry about that. But! I live! And I have pictures of my New Year’s nails and makeup looks.

Never mind I wore them to work. I still was all sparkly while I did my thing. ๐Ÿ™‚

First up: the face!

IMG_20131231_122320IMG_20131231_122409IMG_20131231_122339

Maybe I hit selfie overload, haha! ย The eye makeup is Stila’s Dare to Bare palette, and lip gloss is Vera Moore Cosmetics’ Fuschia. I’m wearing this dress and this pair of earrings; both from Lane Bryant. I looked bright and festive!

Oh, and my nails?

IMG_20131231_110704

Disco balls! I am wearing a gold Orly polish underneath the golden holo glitter from Julep (it’s called Paris.) So basically, I sparkled from head to toe. Just like I like it. ๐Ÿ™‚

I wish for all of you, my readers, to have a lovely and prosperous 2014. Here’s to achieving all that we wish!

Until next time, stay beautiful!

Nail Adventures: Julep December Box

Hi Lovelies!

So, right before I left on my mini vacation last week, my Julep Maven box came. I packed all 5 of my newest colors in my luggage, but not before I took a picture of the haul:

IMG_20131204_005853

I received 5 nail colors (my two for the month, plus 3 add ons), an eyeshadow palette, and hair ties. Bonus: I also received a coupon code for 40% off my next purchase on Julep! The eyeshadow palette was a really nice set of neutrals (browns and golds), and a good mix of matte and shimmer. Really nice, and will be awesome for my day to day makeup looks.

But of course, y’all came for the polish, right? Let me show you them:

photo 1 (4)

From left to right: Evelyn (rich grape purple creme), Misti (dusty teal creme), Joelle (holographic silver glitter), Christine (chocolate brown with silver sheen), and Gianna (gold leaf). Evelyn and Misti are a part of this month’s collection. Christine and Joelle are sold as a duo add on, and Gianna was an add on as well. I’m really excited to use Gianna because it will give an awesome granite look to a nail (I have a nail look coming that showcases this perfectly.)

Oh, and by the way: for those nail polish fanatics that either heard of Julep but haven’t tried it, or for those who like to look at their polishes in person before buying them: Julep has a Pop Up Shop coming Friday! I kept seeing the buzz about it online, and since I follow them on Instagram (@julepmaven) when it was confirmed, I was stoked! I’ll have to do a spreadsheet to keep from rebuying the same colors. Having written that, I ought to be ashamed for owning that much nail polish, but you know what? I’ve got no shame. ๐Ÿ™‚ Go here for more details and the address. I’m headed there after work tomorrow, because it will only be open for a week. Maybe I’ll see some of y’all there!

Until next time, stay beautiful!

Disclaimer: I’m not being paid to advertise for Julep, I just love their stuff that much and want to share!
